Free Throws
The only shot nobody guards — and a masterclass in routine
How to Shoot Basketball Free Throws is part of Movement & Ball Skills, BasketballGraph's level 2 basketball curriculum. This lesson explains free points, same shot, the routine is the skill, pressure-proofing.
01Free points, same shot
A free throw is the same shot every time: 15 feet, nobody guarding you, all the time you need (10 seconds). That sameness is the opportunity — it's the most practicable shot in basketball.
Use identical B.E.E.F. mechanics: balanced stance just behind the line (don't step on it — that's a violation), eyes on target, elbow under, full follow-through. Most players place their shooting-side foot at the center of the line, aligned with the rim.
02The routine is the skill
Every great free-throw shooter has a routine: same number of dribbles, same breath, same rhythm, every single time. The routine isn't superstition — it's a mental reset button that makes the 10,000th free throw feel like the 1st.
Example: catch from the ref → three dribbles → spin the ball → deep breath → eyes to rim → shoot. Build yours and never change it, in practice or in games.
03Pressure-proofing
Free throws decide close games — teams shoot them in the highest-pressure moments while crowds scream. The routine plus process focus (think 'follow through,' not 'we need this') is how shooters stay calm.
Practice them tired: shoot free throws between sprints or after drills, in sets of two like games. Practicing only fresh, in silence, prepares you for conditions that never happen.
