Man-to-Man Defense
The base defense of basketball, assembled
Man-to-Man Defense: Basketball Guide is part of Team Play, BasketballGraph's level 4 basketball curriculum. This lesson explains the shell, assembled, guarding actions, not just players, principles over scheme.
01The shell, assembled
Man-to-man assigns each defender a player — but it's not five private duels. It's the shell you've been building: on-ball containment, one-pass-away denial or gap help, weak-side helpers in the paint, and rotations behind every breakdown.
A possession of good man defense looks like constant motion: every pass triggers all five defenders to jump to the ball — adjusting their triangle within the flight of the pass, not after the catch.
02Guarding actions, not just players
Offenses attack man defense with actions — screens, cuts, handoffs — so man defense comes with team answers:
• Off-ball screens: chase shooters, shortcut under vs. non-shooters, or switch.
• Cuts through the lane: bump them off their line, never let a cutter cross your face untouched.
• Post catches: play behind, front, or double — a scheme decision.
Switching trades matchups to kill an action — seamless against equal players, dangerous when it leaves a small guarding a big (a 'mismatch' the offense will hunt).
03Principles over scheme
Whatever the variation, championship man defense reduces to principles:
1. Ball pressure without getting beaten.
2. Shrink the floor — five defenders positioned as if connected by rope; the ball's side of the floor gets crowded, the weak side gets one defender splitting two men.
3. No paint, no free throws, contest everything.
4. Finish with the rebound — a great 20 seconds of defense that ends in an offensive board counts for nothing.
