Creating Your Own Shot

Step-backs, pull-ups, and getting to YOUR spots

Creating Your Own Shot: Basketball Guide is part of Individual Decisions, BasketballGraph's level 3 basketball curriculum. This lesson explains separation moves, using fakes and footwork, spots, not highlights.

01Separation moves

When nobody creates an open shot for you, you create one:

Pull-up — stop instantly off the dribble into your jumper before the defender can react.

Step-back — a hard drive-step forward, then push off backward into space for the shot. The threat of the drive creates the room.

Side-step — a lateral hop off the dribble, sliding out of the defender's contest line.

All three convert dribble threat into shot space.

02Using fakes and footwork

The shot fake (a short, believable lift of the ball with eyes to the rim) makes closeout defenders leave their feet — then you drive past or step into a better shot. Rule: fake like you shoot, or nobody bites.

Combine with the footwork you already own: jab into step-back, shot-fake into one-dribble pull-up. Creation is a vocabulary; fluent players chain short words into sentences.

03Spots, not highlights

Pros don't practice infinite moves — they master getting to 2–3 favorite spots (say, right elbow pull-up, left-wing step-back) from many starting points. Defenders know where they're going and still can't stop it.

Build your own spot map: chart where you actually make shots, pick your best two, and rehearse arriving there off catches, drives, and screens. Depth beats breadth. Every rep should end on balance — falling sideways is a low-percentage lifestyle.
