Coaching Foundations
Teach safely, organize learning, and serve the players in front of you
Coaching Foundations: Basketball Guide is part of Applied Pathways, BasketballGraph's level 6 basketball curriculum. This lesson explains coach the level in front of you, demonstrate, observe, adjust, safety and belonging are performance conditions.
01Coach the level in front of you
Good coaching begins with the players' experience, development, health, and available time—not the coach's favorite system. The same basketball concepts apply across rec, club, high school, and college, but the volume, language, constraints, and competitive expectations should change.
02Demonstrate, observe, adjust
Give one clear goal, demonstrate or show an example, create many active repetitions, and observe the behavior that matters. Feedback should be short and actionable. If players cannot succeed, simplify the space, speed, opposition, or information before repeating the same instruction louder.
03Safety and belonging are performance conditions
Plan appropriate workload, water and recovery, legal contact, emergency procedures, and an emotionally safe environment. Make roles clear and treat officials, opponents, families, and every player with consistency. Development cannot be separated from trust.
