Practice Design

The science of running a great practice

How to Design a Basketball Practice is part of Applied Pathways, BasketballGraph's level 6 basketball curriculum. This lesson explains plan backwards, minute by minute, make it game-like, compete and track.

01Plan backwards, minute by minute

Great practices are designed backwards from what the team needs next game and next month. Write a minute-by-minute plan: dynamic warm-up → skill blocks → small-sided games → team concepts → competitive finish → free throws tired. Post it; players move on a clock, not on a whistle-whim.

Maximize reps per minute: no lines of twelve kids waiting for one ball. Stations, small groups, every player a ball. A 90-minute practice where each player touches the ball 500 times beats a 3-hour practice of standing.

02Make it game-like

Skills transfer when practiced in game-like conditions. Block practice (20 identical reps) builds a motion fast; random/varied practice (mixed, decision-attached reps) makes it stick under pressure. Progress every drill along the ladder: unguarded → guided defense → live.

Small-sided games (2v2, 3v3) are the gold standard: more touches, more decisions, more space than 5v5 — and they force the concepts (spacing, help, closeouts) at learnable speed. Constraint-led coaching — 'no dribbles', 'must score off a cut', 'paint touch before any three' — makes the game itself teach.

03Compete and track

Everything scoreboarded: drills with winners, losers, and small stakes (losers run, winners pick the music). Competition raises intensity to game level and reveals character — practice is where you learn who your players are.

Track numbers across weeks: shooting percentages by drill, turnover counts in scrimmage, free throws under fatigue. Improvement you can't measure is improvement you're guessing about. And end on time, every time — a coach who steals players' time teaches them not to trust the plan.
