Help Defense & Rotations

Five defenders moving as one organism

Help Defense & Rotations: Basketball Guide is part of Team Play, BasketballGraph's level 4 basketball curriculum. This lesson explains the help concept, help the helper, the rules that make it work.

01The help concept

No defender stops every drive alone — team defense is built on help: when the ball beats one defender, the nearest off-ball defender (positioned in the paint-side 'help' spot you learned) slides over to stop the drive.

But help creates a new problem: the helper's man is now open. Solving that chain reaction is called rotation — and it's the difference between a defense and five individuals.

02Help the helper

The full chain: ball gets beaten → helper stops the ball → the next defender rotates to the helper's abandoned man ('helping the helper') → everyone else shifts one assignment over, and someone 'splits' two offensive players on the weak side.

When the ball kicks out, defenders close out (sprint under control, high hand, short choppy steps on arrival) and the whole shell re-forms. One possession can contain three or four rotations — which is why defenses are graded on effort per second, not steals.

03The rules that make it work

Three non-negotiables:

1. Talk. Every action is called out — 'help left!', 'I got your man!', 'shooter!'. Silent rotation is a contradiction.

2. Help early. Arriving as the driver gathers is a stop; arriving as they lay it in is a foul.

3. No middle help off great shooters. Who you help off of is a scouting decision — leave the worst shooter, never the best.

Master this and zone, switching, and pressing (coming next) are just variations on the same trust.
