Scouting & Film Study
Watching basketball like a professional
Scouting & Film Study: Basketball Guide is part of Game Intelligence, BasketballGraph's level 5 basketball curriculum. This lesson explains how to watch film, building an opponent scout, tendencies are probabilities.
01How to watch film
Film study is active watching with a question. Instead of following the ball like a fan, pick a lens per viewing: one player's defensive possessions, every pick-and-roll coverage, all 12 of a shooter's catches. Watch possessions multiple times — first the ball, then the actors away from it.
Self-scout too: your own film, watched honestly, is the fastest improvement tool in basketball. Players who can watch themselves without flinching develop twice as fast.
02Building an opponent scout
A standard opponent scouting report covers:
• Personnel — each rotation player's strengths, weaknesses, tendencies ("#23: elite right hand, won't pass off the drive, shoots 24% from three — go under every screen").
• Offensive habits — favorite sets and actions, especially after timeouts.
• Defensive scheme — man/zone, PnR coverages, where help comes from.
• Special situations — press looks, inbound plays, endgame habits.
The discipline: three keys, not thirty. Players can execute three things; a phone book of notes executes nothing.
03Tendencies are probabilities
Scouting deals in probabilities, not certainties: '#5 drives right 80% of the time' means you shade him left and accept being beaten right occasionally — playing the percentages IS the win, even when a single play goes wrong.
Combine film with the analytics you learned: numbers find the pattern ('they give up corner threes'), film explains it ('their big never leaves the paint in drop coverage'). Numbers propose, film confirms, the game plan disposes. This trio — data, film, plan — is the modern coaching workflow at every serious level.
