Reading the Defense
Seeing the game two passes ahead
Reading the Defense: Basketball Guide is part of Game Intelligence, BasketballGraph's level 5 basketball curriculum. This lesson explains diagnose before you attack, reading individual defenders, the advantage ledger.
01Diagnose before you attack
High-IQ offense starts with a diagnosis, made in the first seconds of a possession: Man or zone? (Send a cutter through — if a defender chases, it's man.) Switching or fighting through screens? Where is the help coming from? Who is the weakest defender?
Every answer prescribes an attack: zones get overloaded and beaten through the middle; switch-everything gets mismatch-hunted; drop coverage gets pull-ups. You learned each answer in Tier 4 — now the skill is choosing among them live.
02Reading individual defenders
Within any scheme, read the person: How do they closeout — flying (drive by them) or short (shoot over them)? Which foot is up — attack the lead foot's side. Do they ball-watch off-ball — backdoor them. Are they in foul trouble — attack their chest and make them choose.
And read eagerness: an overhelping defender is a kick-out machine waiting to happen. The best offensive players attack tendencies, not just space.
03The advantage ledger
Think of every possession as an advantage ledger. Actions (a screen, a drive, a post seal) create small advantages; decisions either grow them or refund them. A beaten closeout attacked instantly becomes a layup three passes later; the same closeout met with a hesitation dribble becomes nothing.
This is the mental model that unifies everything you've learned: offense is the craft of creating, keeping, and compounding advantages until the defense breaks. Say it once per possession while you watch a game — it will change how you see basketball.
